چکیده

This paper presents an analysis of acoustic duration of vowels in Djambarrpuyŋu, a Yolŋu Matha language spoken in Arnhem Land, in northern Australia. Djambarrpuyŋu has been described as having phonologically long and short vowels, and there have also been suggestions that consonants following short vowels undergo compensatory lengthening. The aims of this study are to investigate the phonetic nature of phonologically long and short vowels in Djambarrpuyŋu, and assess whether there is any evidence of consonantal lengthening. Results show that there are significant duration differences between the phonologically long and short vowels, and furthermore that consonants following short vowels have significantly greater duration than those after long vowels.

Perceived Vowel Duration in Civili: Minimal Pairs and the Effect of Post-vocalic Voicing

Vowel duration has been an issue in the study of Civili. Although minimal pairs based on vowel duration can be established at both perceptual and physical level, vowel lengthening still occurs in the context of voiced consonants in the language. A comparison between a measured physical duration and an experimentally perceived duration confirms the phonemic distinctiveness of vowel length and in...

Accentual prominence and consonant lengthening and strengthening in Mawng

In this paper we investigate the contribution of consonant duration to the signaling of accentual prominence in Mawng, a language spoken in Northern Australia. We compare consonants in VC sequences where the vowel is part of an accented or tonic syllable vs. non-tonic (non-prominent) VC sequences. We further analyse the contribution of vowel-consonant timing to prominence, through an analysis o...

The long and the short and the final: Phonological vowel length and prosodic timing in Hungarian

The phonological vowel and consonant length distinctions in languages such as Hungarian may provide a constraint on the degree to which prosodic structure can influence speech segment duration. Here we show that, like many other languages, Hungarian does mark prosodic structure with durational variation, in particular, utterance-final lengthening. There is an influence of phonological vowel len...

Farsi vowel compensatory lengthening: an experimental approach

This paper addresses a question concerning phonological operations involved standard Farsi vowel Compensatory Lengthening (CL) due to glottal consonant deletion in syllabic coda. Specifically, I question two current views related to CL process. One view suggests that glottal allophonic weakening is compensated by vowel lengthening. Another view suggests that glottal consonant is deleted, but va...

Final accent and lengthening in French

An experiment was carried out to examine the possibility of word-final F0 rise without lengthening in French. The results show that, although a variability is observed depending on speaker, syllable structure and syllable number, the final rise can be unaccompanied by vowel lengthening in the phrasemedian final syllable of a noun, in difference to the phrasefinal syllable which is lengthened to...
